Iwase Port Area
Iwase still retains its nostalgic old-town atmosphere, thriving since the Edo period as a bustling port for Kitamae ships traveling the Sea of Japan. The streets of Omachi, lined with traditional storehouses and shipping warehouses, along with beautiful seaside views, make it perfect for a leisurely stroll. Many buildings from the Meiji era remain, preserving a charming historic ambiance.
Recently, renovated storehouses have become galleries, and new shops such as specialty food stores, beer pubs, and sake bars have opened. Iwase is also popular as a gastronomy destination, with six restaurants featured in the Michelin Guide.
Near Iwasehama Station, the Canal Hall offers a handmade walking map, rental bicycles, and local souvenirs. Don’t miss the fresh white shrimp dishes, a local specialty. Recommended spots to visit include the Iwase Port Observation Deck and the historic residence of the wealthy merchant, the Baba Family House.
Access is easy via the Fugan Suijo Line boat from Toyama Station North Canal Park or by tram from Toyama Station. Enjoy a relaxing time where history and fine dining blend beautifully in Iwase.
