Buddhist Jizo Statues and Long-Life Springs

Spring water famous for healing all kinds of sickness
These statues preside over springs from the Itachi River whose water is believed to cure sickness. Jizo is a Japanese Buddhist Bodhisattva who has achieved enlightenment but remains to help others in this life. Jizo is also revered as a guardian of children. The famous Akutagawa Literary Prize novel “Hotaru Gawa” (River of Fireflies) is set here, and the drama of the same name was filmed just south along the river.
